On Saturday, April 22, 2017, University of Chicago students and postdocs from the Biological Sciences Division came together with other STEM folks and beyond on Saturday to demonstrate in support of science.

An estimated 60,000 people showed up to march on Saturday, according to the official March for Science Chicago press release. The crowd heard five speakers before the march, including Fredy Lopez, 8th grader and essay contest winner; Karen Weigert, Senior Fellow for The Chicago Council on Global Affairs; Garry Cooper, PhD, CEO/President and co-founder of Rheaply; Dr. Lee Bitsoi, Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Rush University; and keynote speaker Emily Graslie, The Field Museum’s Chief Curiosity Correspondent.

The crowd proceeded up Columbus Drive to the south steps of the Field Museum. There, marchers could learn about science at the tables of over 50 organizations and institutions, including the University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division's Vincent Lynch lab, represented by Katie Mike (Human Genetics), Phil Ross (Genetics, Genomics, and Systems Biology), Manny Vazquez (Human Genetics), and postdoc Mirna Marinic.
